'During the counter-attck near DERNANCOURT South West of ALBERT on 5th April, 1918, this N.C.O. was No. 1 of a Lewis gun team. Although under heavy Rifle, Machine Gun and Trench Mortar fire, he displayed great resourcefulness in moving his gun from positon to position in order to use it to greater advantage. Throughout the whole of the operations he continued to work his gun, and by his initiative and courage inspired and cheered the men of his team.'
