Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in organizing the carrying of ammunition and water to the front line, and in clearing the wounded from the forward area. Though suffering severely from shell shock, he refused to leave his post until incapacitated. He set a very valuable example to all ranks at a critical time.'
