Meritorious Service Medal 'For consistent continuous devotion to duty during operations active and otherwise over a period of 15 months in FRANCE when first employed as a runner until date as Orderly Room Clerk. He has always shown a splendid example of devotion and is absolutely tireless, even now volunteering for jobs taking him to front line when runners are fatigued and on several occasions has carried important messages through heavy shell fire, quite undeterred and resumed his ordinary work on return. His consistency is of outstanding merit.' Second description reads: 'For continuous good service and devotion to duty as Orderly Room Clerk during period 22nd September 1917 to 24th February 1918. He has been untiring in his efforts to be of service and was brought to notice for carrying messages under fire when the runners were exhausted. The example he has set has been of great value and has earned the respect of all his comrades.'
