'For devotion to duty and bravery during the operations carried out by 4th Australian Infantry Brigade at NOREUIL on 11th April, 1917. this Non commissioned Officer was sent to take charge of the 14th Battalion and they were left with an Non Commissioned Officer to carry on. He carried out his duties most assiduously remaining with the Battalion and advancing to the second line where he established communication with Brigade Headquarters; although he was worn out through loss of sleep for three days and nights, he carried on in a gallant and devoted manner.'
