Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O., when in charge of a reconnoitring patrol sent out to ascertain the dispositions of the hostile line, brought back valuable information, though attacked by a hostile patrol of superior numbers. By prompt and vigorous action he inflicted sufficient casualties on the latter to force them to withdraw. The information brought in by this and other patrols led by this N.C.O. proved of great value.'
