Embarked Australia, 8 May 1915taken on strength of 22nd Bn, Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, 2 November 1915; disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Found guilty, Tel el Kebir, 12 January 1916, of refusing to obey an order from a Commanding Officer: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 3 days' pay.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916.

Found guilty, Roquetoune, France, 2 April 1916, of (1) drunkenness and (2) resisting arrest from Military Police: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Promoted to Sergeant, 20 May 1916; with unit, 1 October 1917; with unit, 30 June 1918; on leave to England, 2 October 1918; returned to unit from leave, 20 October 1918; disembarked Southampton, England, 3 January 1919.

Admitted to Fovant Military Hospital, 31 January 1919 (pneumonia); transferred to 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny, 27 February 1919; discharged from hospital and marched in to Weymouth Command Depot, 25 March 1919.
