Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when the enemy raided and had entered the trenches at places. He was then carrying a message overland to the front line. On reaching the trench he was faced by six of the enemy; he immediately bayoneted one, and his determined attack so cowed the others that they at once surrendered. Thanks to his prompt and gallant action, six of the enemy were accounted for.'
