War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Brisbane on HMAT 'Itonius', 30 December 1915. Joined 47th Bn, Tel-el-Kebir, 9 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 2 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 9 June 1916. Found guilty, 25 August 1916, of (1) drunkenness, (2) being absent without leave, 1.30 pm, 23 August, to 7.30 pm, 23 August 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 1 days' pay; forfeited total of 8 days' pay. Admitted to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, 1 September 1916 (gun shot wound, face); transferred to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 3 September 1916. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'Jan Breydel', 5 September 1916, and admitted to Military Hospital, Chatham; discharged on furlough, 26 October 1916, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs. Proceeded to France from 12th Training Bn, 15 November 1916; taken on strength of 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Etaples, 17 November 1916; rejoined 47th Bn in the field, 9 December 1916. Transferred to 4th Division Salvage Company and taken on strength, 16 January 1917; promoted to Corporal, 25 September 1917.
