War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength of 5th Bn, Serapeum, Egypt, 22 February 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 25 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 March 1916; with unit, 6 January 1917; transferred to, and taken on strength of, 1st Anzac Corps Salvage Section, 10 January 1917; taken on strength of 1st Australian Division Salvage Company, 14 April 1917. Found guilty, 1 July 1917, of being absent without leave from 9:30 pm, 20 June to 10:15 pm, 21 June 1917: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 16 days' pay. On leave to United Kingdom, 2 September 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 15 September 1917; marched out to unit, 27 September 1917. Admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance and transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 4 November 1917 (PUO); to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 5 November 1917; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 25 November 1917; marched out to Rest Camp, 26 November 1917.
