War service: joined unit at Lemnos from reinforcements, 31 October 1915. Promoted Lance Corporal, 9 November 1915. Disembarked Alexandria from Lemnos, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Promoted Corporal, 23 February 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 2 April 1916. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 18 July 1916; promoted Sergeant, 29 September 1916. Detached for duty with Permanent Cadre of 2nd Training Bn, Durrington, England, 23 July 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 11 October 1917; rejoined 6th Bn, 19 October 1917. Promoted 2nd Lt, 24 October 1917. On leave to united Kingdom, 4 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 19 February 1918.
