'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while engaged on pack transport work. He showed the greatest coolness and initiative throughout, especially when his convoy came under heavy shell fire. Though wounded he personally obtained assistance for two of his men who were wounded, and then re-organized his command and reached his destination.'
