'For special good work during the period he was in the front line trenches near GUEUDECOURT. On the night of 23rd/24th February 1917 he worked with tireless, unselfish determination under most difficult and dangerous conditions to complete 270 yards of trench within 75 yards of the Boche front line. he set a splendid example to the men under his command.'
