'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an advance of 5.000 yards in the attack at FRAMERVILLE near AMIENS on the 9th August, 1918, he displayed great coolness throughout, especially when under heavy enemy machine gun fire. Later he showed great courage in rescuing 4 men from a dug-out that had been destroyed by enemy fire, and which continued to receive attention from the enemy whilst he was employed in the work of rescue. Again in a further advance he carried out valuable reconnaissance work under fire, showing marked courage.'
