Disembarked Alexandria from Mudros, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 26 March 1916. Taken on strength, 6th Machine Gun Company, 10 May 1916.

Appointed Corporal, 10 May 1916.

Evacuated from Ypres, 21 October 1916, to Field Ambulance (simple fracture, left tibia, accidental while running not on duty); admitted to 30th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 22 October 1916; transferred to England, 31 October 1916, and admitted same day to Graylingwell War Hospital, London (sprained ankle, slight); marched into No 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 6 February 1917; marched out to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 14 March 1917.

Found guilty, 14 April 1917, of while at Hurdcott neglecting to obey G.O. Bounds in that he in Wilton at 10.30 pm on 14th inst. without leave: admonished by Captain Anderson.

Marched into Machine Gun Training Group, Grantham, 16 May 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 5 December 1917; rejoined 6th Machine Gun Company, 10 December 1917.

Detached to Signal School, England, 3 February 1918; reported to Army Signal School, Dunstable, for Signal Course, assembling on 7 February 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 12 April 1918; rejoined 6th Machine Gun Bn (unit designation changed), 20 April 1918.

Promoted Sergeant and appointed Battalion Signal Sergeant, 30 April 1918.

Wounded in action, 9 June 1918 (gun shot wound, leg and hand), and admitted to 5th Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 20th Casualty Clearing Station; by Ambulance Train No 17 to 32nd Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 11 June 1918; admitted, 12 June 1918; transferred to England, 22 June 1918, and admitted same day to General Military Hospital, Edmonton; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 7 August 1918. Discharged on furlough, 9 August 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, 23 August 1918. Marched into No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 23 August 1918. Marched out to Overseas Training Brigade, 3 October 1918; to Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 18 October 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 29 October 1918; rejoined unit in the field, 2 November 1918.

Marched out for return to Australia, 10 January 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Warwickshire', 5 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 28 May 1919; discharged Melbourne, 27 July 1919.
