Found guilty, 10 July 1917, of being absent without leave, 7.30 pm, 1 July, to 2.30 pm, 9 July 1917: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 16 days' pay. Proceeded to France through Southampton, 23 July 1917; marched into 3rd Australian Divisional Base Depot, Rouelles, 24 July 1917; marched out to 41st Bn, 8 August 1917, and taken on strength, 10 August 1917.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 October 1917, and transferred to 17th Casualty Clearing Station; to 11th General Hospital, Damies, 19 October 1917 (myalgia); to Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 14 October 1917; discharged to 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Rouelles, 26 October 1917; rejoined Bn, 22 November 1917; granted leave to Paris, 15 February 1918; rejoined unit, 3 March 1918.

Found guilty, 11 March 1918, of being absent without leave, 6.00 am, 24 February, to 8.00 pm, 2 March 1918: forfeited 28 days' pay; forfeited total of 35 days' pay.

Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, 26 May 1918 (gas attack); transferred to 55th Casualty Clearing Station, 27 May 1918; to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 9 June 1918. Embatked Rouen on HS 'Gloucester Castle', 12 June 1918; admitted to Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, 13 June 1918; granted furlough, 29 June 1918; marched into No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 13 July 1918 (Classified B.1, A.1); marched into No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 10 August 1918. Commenced return to Australia on HT 'Ascanius', 9 February 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 26 March 1919, for onward travel to Brisbane. Discharged Brisbane, 9 May 1919.
