Proceeded overseas to France, 9 September 1916; marched in to 2nd Australian division Base Depot, Etaples, France, and taken on strength of 14th Bn, 11 September 1916; joined unit in Belgium and reverted to Private, 24 September 1916; to be Lance Corporal, 5 March 1917; to be Corporal, 3 May 1917; to be Lance Sergeant, 10 August 1917.

Wounded in action and admitted to 6th Australian field Ambulance, 20 September 1917 (gun shot wounds to chest and right leg); transferred to 53rd General Hospital, Boulogne, 24 September 1917; to England, 12 October 1917; admitted to Colchester Military Hospital, Suffolk, England, 13 October 1917; discharged from hospital and granted leave from 23 November to 7 December 1917.

Marched in, from leave, to No 2 Command depot, Weymouth, 7 December 1917; marched in to No 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 15 December 1917; marched in to Overseas Training Depot, Longbridge Deverill, 28 February 1918; proceeded overseas to France, 13 March 1918; marched in to Australian Infantry Base Depot, Havre, France, 14 March 1918; marched out to unit, 15 March 1918; taken on strength of 17th Bn, 18 March 1918; promoted to temporary Sergeant Vice, 27 July 1918.

Found guilty, 17 October 1918, of being absent without leave from 11:59 pm, 15 October to 8:00 pm, 16 October 1918: reprimanded by Commanding Officer and forfeited 1 day's pay.

Marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 February 1919; proceeded overseas to France, 27 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Shropshire', from Plymouth, England, 1 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 16 May 1919; discharged, 12 October 1919 (medically unfit: synovitis to left knee).
