'fFor conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a scout, he gained most valuable information, which greatly assisted in the machine gun work, and continually passed through heavy barrages when carrying messages. With another man he captured a machine gun and seven prisoners, and showed splendid courage and initiative.'
