Originally enlisted as No 2138, 25th Bn, 4th Reinforcements. File notes embarkation from Brisbane on HMAT A26 'Armadale', 18 September 1915, but it appears he did not in fact embark in that Reinforcement on that date.

War service: Egypt, Western Front

Embarked Brisbane, 5 October 1915; Taken on strength of 9th Bn and marched in to Habeita, Egypt, 28 February 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 27 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 3 April 1916.

Wounded in action and admitted to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 27 July 1916 (gun shot wound); transferred to England, 29 July 1916; admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester, 30 July 1916.

Marched in, from leave, to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 29 August 1916; marched in to Australian Imperial Force War Chest Club, London, 5 September 1916.

Admitted to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 16 January 1917 (rash); discharged from hospital and marched in for duty with the War Chest Club, London, 23 January 1917.

Detached from duty and marched out from Administration Headquarters, 19 April 1917; marched in to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 20 April 1917; transferred to, and taken on strength of, 69th Bn, Wareham, 24 April 1917; marched out to 16th Brigade, Wareham, 29 April 1917; transferred to 9th Bn and marched in to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 19 September 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Boonah', 21 July 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 20 September 1918; discharged, 24 October 1918 (medically unfit: gun shot wound to right arm).
