'At DERNANCOURT South West of ALBERT on 5th April 1918. During the attack by enemy he crawled forward to position and commenced sniping. He did excellent work and stuck to his post until surrounded. he was captured, but afterwards escaped and rejoined his platoon and continued to fight. His courage and resource was a splendid incentive to all who saw him.'
