Military Medal

'In the attack near FRAMERVILLE on 11th August, 1918, Corporal Down's services were invaluable. When his officer was badly wounded, he took charge of the sub-section and at great personal risk moved between his guns, supervising consolidation. He later tended wounded under heavy fire in the open in a most calm and gallant manner. During the attack on the 9th August, he also proved himself an exceptionally devoted N.C.O.'
