'On 24th April, 1918, between the junction of the rivers SOMME and ANCRE, Acting Bombardier DREW was in charge of the telephonists of the Battery. During the enemy's bombardment of gas and H.E., which lasted 8 hours, Acting Bombardier DREW, in company with [22974] Gunner RIDGEWAY, worked continuously on the telephone lines, and under tremendous difficulties, got in touch with Group Headquarters. The lines were broken by hostile shell fire continuously, and these men displayed the greatest courage and ability, spending practically the whole day on the lines, exposed throughout to incessant and heavy shell fire. Both performed splendid work, showing complete disregard for personal safety.'
