'For gallantry and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917 - as No. 1 of a Lewis Gun team he worked without ceasing, and showed fine judgement in using his gun. On an advanced post, and under heavy sniping fire he protected the men, digging and inflicting numerous casualties on the enemy. He assisted in the capture of an enemy patrol and at all times showed absolute disregard of personal safety.'
