Embarked from Sydney, 5 October 1915; disembarked Suez. Taken on strength, 1st Bn, Tel-el-Kebir, 14 February 1916. Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 21 February 1916 (tonsillitis); rejoined Bn, 24 February 1916. Transferred to 1st Pioneer Bn and taken on strength, Serapeum, 10 March 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 2 April 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 30 August 1916.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 1 October 1916 (gun shot and shrapnel wound, right chest, slight); admitted to 5th Field Ambulance; transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. Transferred to 25th Ambulance Train, 3 October 1916, and transferred to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, France. Transferred to England on board HS 'St David', 6 October 1916, and admitted to 5th Northern General Hospital, Leicester. Discharged from hospital and marched out to No. 1 Command Depot, Weymouth, 30 October 1916. Marched out to Australian Details Camp, Perham Downs, 28 December 1916.

Marched in to Pioneer Training Bn, 3 April 1917. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 3-7 July 1917: deprived of Lance Corporal stripe and awarded forfeiture of 5 days' pay. Found guilty, 6 August 1917, of being absent without leave, 27 July-3 August 1917: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 24 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 18 October 1917; rejoined 1st Pioneer Bn, 23 October 1917.

Granted leave to England, 20 October 1918; rejoined unit in France, 8 November 1918. Treated at 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 9 November 1918 (septic arm), and transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville. Discharged to No. 1 Convalescent Depot, Le Havre, 21 April 1918. Marched in to Australian Infantry Base Depot, 12 January 1919. Found guilty, 17 January 1919, of drunkenness and failure to obey an order given by his superior officer: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 28 days' pay.

Transferred to 1st Australian Divisional Train, 1 February 1919, and appointed Driver.

Marched out for return to Australia, and reverted to Private, 29 March 1919. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Nestor' from Liverpool, 20 May 1919; disembarked Sydney, 4 July 1919; discharged, 27 August 1919.
