'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. As N.C.O. in charge of a Lewis Gun team, he showed fine judgment in handling his gun, under heavy fire set a splendid example to his men. He occupied an advanced post, and at about 1.30 a.m. on 22nd September he observed an enemy patrol of 5 coming towards them. He opened fire, wounding one of the enemy. He at once went out and secured the wounded man and another unwounded prisoner. Handing them over, he went forward and searched for the rest of the patrol.'

Appointed Lance Corporal, 11 April 1917; promoted to Temporary Corporal, 6 May 1917.

Found guilty, 1 August 1917, of neglecting the good order and Military discipline in that he allowed smoking in Billets: awarded forfeiture of temporary rank of Corporal.

Promoted to Temporary Corporal, 26 September 1917; awarded Military Medal, 14 October 1917. Promoted Corporal to complete establishment, 27 December 1917; proceeded to 5th English Bn, 31 December 1917; marched in, 5 January 1918.

Attended 8th Lewis Gun Course at the Australian School of Musketry, Tidworth, from 17 January to 31 January 1918.

Admitted to No 1 Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 11 February 1918 (venereal disease: period of treatment, 5 days); discharged from Hospital, 15 February 1918; marched out to Fovant, 2 April 1918; marched in, 22 April 1918; taken to Group Hospital, Hurdcott, 8 May 1918; attached for duty, 25 April 1918; admitted to General Hospital, Fovant, 10 May 1918 (influenza and jaundice); discharged to Training Bn, 9 July 1918; marched in to No 3 Convalescent Depot, 9 July 1918; transferred to Parkhouse Hospital, 3 September 1918 (sick); marched in to No 1 Convalescent Depot, 17 September 1918; marched out over seas to join Training Brigade, France, 21 October 1918.

Found guilty, 5 November 1918, of being absent without leave, from midnight, 6 November, to 5:40 pm, 6 November 1918; awarded reprimand by Major Devonshire.

Proceeded to join unit, 26 November 1918; rejoined Bn, 30 November 1918; marched out from unit, 15 January 1919; marched out to England, 20 January 1919; marched in to Hurdcott, 21 January 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Prince Ludwig', from London, 9 July 1919; disembarked, 3 September 1919; discharged, 12 November 1919.
