'On 24.9.17 this private displayed great heroism and disregard of personal danger while carrying wounded from HOOGE TUNNEL to BIRR CROSS ROADS. When this area was under an intense enemy bombardment. On the morning of the 24.9.1917 a man was wounded about 150 yards from the Post at which he was stationed. With a companion he at once went to his assistance and in spite of heavy shelling he brought him into the dressing station, and subsequently carried him to the next post.'
