War service: embarked from Sydney, 18 November 1915; taken on strength, 7th Light Horse Regiment, Maadi, Egypt, 28 December 1915. Found guilty, 8 January 1916, on being drunk in town, of creating a disturbance, of resisting arrest, and of using obscene language to an officer: awarded 21 days' detention and forfeiture of 4 days' pay. Admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Cairo, 4 February 1916 (internal abdominal injury); discharged to British Red Cross Convalescent Camp, Montazah, 9 February 1916; returned to duty, 14 February 1916.

Found guilty, Maadi, 19 February 1916, of drunkenness, of creating a disturbance in the 7th Light Horse Dry Canteen, of using threatening language to an N.C.O, of spitting in the face of an N.C.O., and of escaping from the Guard Room: awarded 78 days' Field Punishment No. 2. Returned to unit from detention, 18 March 1916.

Found guilty of gambling in Cairo on 23 March 1916: awarded confinement to camp for 7 days.

Found guilty, 22 April 1916, of being absent without leave, 12-15 April 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No. 2.

Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Abbassia, 3 May 1916; discharged to Details, 23 June 1916: 54 days' treatment.

Brought into Camp under escort, 30 July 1916; escaped, 31 July 1916; apprehended, 6 August 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 7 days' pay.

Tried by Field General Court Martial at Marseilles, France, 21 August 1916: found guilty of escaping lawful custody: awarded 42 days' Field Punishment No. 2. Disembarked at Alexandria from Marseilles, 5 October 1916. Found guilty, 14 October 1916, of escaping from custody, of creating a disturbance and of using abusive language to an officer: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 28 days' pay. Escaped from custody and posted as absent by the Provost Marshal, 1 November 1916. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 30 October-8 November 1916: awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 10 days' pay.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 7 December 1916: found guilty of drunkenness, using obscene and abusive language to a superior officer, breaking Camp, resisting an escort whose duty it was to arrest him after he had escaped from Camp at Moascar: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Transferred to the Citadel Detention Barracks, Cairo to serve sentence. Commander-in-Chief ordered, 5 March 1917, that the unexpired part of the sentence be suspended and that he be ordered to rejoin his unit. Rejoined 7th Light Horse Regiment, 12 March 1917.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 11 June 1917, for disobeying a lawful command, of drunkenness, and of being absent without leave, 3-5 June 1917. Found guilty and sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Embarked for Australia on board HT 'Berrima' for discharge (Disciplinary Reasons), 15 January 1919; discharged, 17 February 1919. Deemed to be ineligible for award of medals.
