He is a son of my Wife's sister and is an orphan, his mother and father being dead, the latter died at his birth in Russia, after which he was educated by my Wife and self and has had a varied experience in mining and in South Africa. He has been in my own Office [Rowley & Wilson, Mining Engineers, Leeds], and also at Fowlers, Steam Plough Makers of Leeds of whom you have no doubt heard. He was educated at St. Edward's School, Oxford, and has a brother who is now a Lieutenant in an East Riding Regiment now stationed at Ripon, and is expecting to go very soon, I presume most likely to France. You will please excuse me troubling you with the facts of the case, but I feel I may venture to ask your kindly interest in him, as I think he should in due time make a useful man in the Army, and in a profession that will be most useful to himslef.' |
