'He showed admirable courage and unselfishness in action near BROODSEINDE on 18th October, 1917. Enemy were shelling heavily our front line and causing us casualties also practically obliterated portion of trench he was in charge of. He kept his men together and his personal example and disregard of danger inspired his men. Whilst digging out one of his men he was severely wounded in four places by a shell but he carried on, got the man out and attended to him before allowing himself to be cared for. He then directed a new trench to be dug and not until it was finished did he leave to obtain further attention to his wounded.'
