Proceeded from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 12 April 1915. Wounded in action, 3 May 1915 (gun shot wound); rejoined unit, 16 May 1915. Appointed Commanding Officer, 14th Bn, 28 June 1915, with temporary rank of Lt Colonel.

Admitted to Hamrun Military Hospital, Malta, 25 July 1915 (debility); reverted to rank of Major, 19 August 1915; rejoined unit at Gallipoli, 24 August 1915.

Transferred to England, 29 August 1915 (chest and cardiac trouble).

Embarked from Portland, England, for return to Australia on board 'Star of Victoria', as Officer Commanding troops, 19 January 1916 (graded unfit for general service for 6 months); placed on supernumerary list, Egypt, 1 February 1916.
