'During the operations at BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES from 1st to 8th Oct., 1917 Pte. ATKINS distinguished himself by gallant conduct and devotion to duty. Whilst acting as runner he was of invaluable assistance in keeping up communications and much valuable information was conveyed to Battalion Headquarters by his personal efforts. On several occasions he passed through intense enemy barrages without hesitation and his disregard of danger set a fine example to his comrades.'
