Arrived in Australia 9 months prior to enlistment. War service: Egypt Taken on strength, 1st Light Horse Training Regiment, Tel el Kebir, 12 June 1916. Taken on strength, 1st Double Squadron, Serapeum, 6 July 1916. Sick to hospital, 18 August 1916 (inflammation of ear), and admitted to 1/2 E.A. Field Ambulance; transferred to 24th Stationary Hospital, 24 August 1916 (diarrhoea); to No. 3 Australian General Hospital, 31 August 1916. Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Ayrshire', 21 November 1916; disembarked Sydney, 3 January 1917; discharged, 23 January 1917 (left ear: chronic otitis media and deafness; medical report, 7 September 1916, found the condition to be pre-existing, not caused by military service).
