Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When under heavy fire he attacked and silenced an enemy machine gun, handling his Lewis gun with great effect. He showed total disregard for his personal safety in crawling for four hours in the enemy's wire, salving panniers and ammunition for his own guns. He also led several parties through the enemy's wire in search of wounded.'
