'Near ZONNEBEKE, on 12th October, 1917, Corporal ELWORTHY and Gunner STEVENS accompanied the Forward Observing Officer during the attack on the PASSCHENDALE RIDGE, and for a period of over 12 hours, under very heavy shell and machine gun fire. They rendered very valuable services in maintaining communications by Lucas Lamp with an Artillery Relay Post thus enabling valuable information to be transmitted back to Artillery Group Headquarters and keeping Group informed as to the progress of the Operation. This work was carried out under the most trying conditions, and under extremely heavy hostile shell fire, and with utter disregard for personal safety, the men displaying splendid devotion to duty throughout the whole time. During the operations at MESSINES up to the present, these men have continually shown great devotion to duty and the manner in which their work has been performed under trying conditions, and heavy shell fire has been a fine example to the men of their Battery.'
