War service: Western Front Embarked from Adelaide, 23 June 1917; disembarked Plymouth, England, 25 August 1917, and marched in to 3rd Training Bn, Durrington. Marched in to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 6 October 1917. Medical Report, 24 September 1917, stated: 'Patient fainted whilst digging trenches on Gallipoli & was taken to No. 16 C[asualty] C[learing] S[tation] whence he was sent to hospital Cairo. Was in the hospital four months when he was returned to New Zealand as he was originally in the New Zealand forces. Was discharged as unfit May 1916. Patient several fainting attacks after discharge. Re-enlisted in Port Pirie S. Aust. Has only just arrived & has been unable to do any drill.' Commenced return to Australia, 1 November 1917; disembarked Australia, 30 December 1917; discharged (medically unfit: cardiac arrythmia), 4 March 1918. Total war service (AIF): 1 year 31 days of which 191 days were abroad. Medal: British War Medal 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal presumably administered from New Zealand Base Records. |
