Statement, Red Cross File, 3875 Pte J. RYAN, B Company, 30th Bn, 17 June 1918: 'He was killed instantly by a shell which dropped in the trench, when we were holding the front line trench at Passchedaele. I was in the next post, but went round and saw his dead body. He was buried just behind the trench in a grave by himself and it would be about a mile from Passchendaele Village, half way from the top of the Ridge. I knew him well, because he was Batman to Lieut Dowse, B. Co. and I was batman to Lieut Williams, B. Coy. He was in B. [Coy] VIII [Platoon] I think, and I believe he came in the 8th Rfts of 30 Battn. But I am not sure. He was young, 21 or thereabouts, I do not know where his home was.'
