War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Killed in action, 24 November 1915. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Base Records wrote to Mr George Anstee [father], 27 September 1916: ' ... a small parcel of personal effects was received ex Transport "Port Sydney" last month, and transmitted to Mr Frank Anstee, 454 Latrobe Terrace, Ballarat, the registered next of kin and address. Messrs Thos Cook & Son returned the package to this office on Saturday last, as it could not be delivered ... We took delivery and it was placed upon a tray on the table in my own office, but during my temporary absence it was stolen and no trace of it can be found. Unfortunately this is not the first case of theft that has occurred in this branch lately, and although the detectives have been endeavouring to trace the culprit or culprits, so far their efforts have been unavailing. If the stolen article in the present instance were of any great value it might be understood, but their insured value, which is usally an outside estimate in these cases, was only 12/6 so the thief could not have got much for the risk he took. I can only hope and trust his conscience will induce him to return this in some way or other, particularly if he recognises the untold sentimental value they are to the soldier's relatives. Every effort is being made to recover this, if unavailing the amount of insurance will be transmitted to you.' |
