Embarked from Melbourne, 4 April 1916; marched in to 2nd Training Bn, Tel el Kebir, 11 May 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 4 June 1916; taken on strength, 5th Bn, 30 July 1916.

Found guilty, 7 August 1916, of insubordination: awarded 28 days Field Punishment No. 2. Found guilty, 15 September 1916, of being absent from Tatto Roll Call from 9 pm to 9.15 pm, 12 September 1916: awarded 7 days Field Punishment No. 2. Found guilty, 9 October 1916, of being absent without leave from 1600 to 1900, 9 October 1916: awarded 10 days Field Punishment No. 2.

Admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance, 14 November 1916 (bronchitis); transferred to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 22 November 1916 (severe bronchitis); to England, 22 November 1916, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, 23 November 1916; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 11 December 1916; discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 December 1916; to No. 4 Command Depot, Wareham (date not recorded); to No. 2 Command Depot, 12 April 1917.

Commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board HT 'Miltiades', 4 May 1917 (asthma); disembarked Melbourne, 2 July 1917; discharged, 11 August 1917.
