'Near HOOGE, FRANCE, on 20th September, 1917 during the attack on GLENCORSE and POLYGONVELDE WOODS L/Cpl. AUSTIN, who was in charge of a Lewis Gun Section, led his men forward under heavy artillery and machine gun fire to the final objective, after which he pushed forward to a prominent position and gave covering fire to the remainder of his Company. He engaged an enemy machine gun which was causing great trouble to our men while consolidating. His conduct and devotion to duty set a fine example to the men of his Section.'
