Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made a reconnoissance of a well 150 deep, and found that it contained over 500 slabs of explosives, which had been placed in it by the enemy. The explosives were connected with two fuses, which were ready to be fired simultaneously. He succeeded in disconnecting the fuses, and in removing all the explosives. He
