War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 27 May 1916; found guilty, 23 June 1916, of being absent without leave, 18-21 June 1916: awarded 168 hours' detention, and forfeited 11 days' pay.disembarked Plymouth, England, 18 July 1916. Found guilty, 7 September 1916, of endeavouring to escape from lawful custody in that he on 10.8.16 at 2 p.m. at No. 5 Camp Larkhill while being confined in No. 7 Guard Room removed several panes of glass with a clasp knife: awarded 21 days' confined to barracks and ordered to pay damage done to windows of guard room. Found guilty, 12 August 1916, of (1) escaping from lawful custody in that he at Exeter on 18.7.16 broke away from lawful custody; (2) absent without leave from 10.30 p.m. 18 July, till 12.30 p.m., 1 August 1916: awarded 21 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 15 days' pay under Royal Warrant; total forfeiture: 36 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 22 November 1916. Admitted to 10th Field Ambulance, 2 December 1916 (influenza); transferred to 8th Casualty Clearing Station, 3 December 1916 (pneumonia); to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 8 December 1916; to England, 14 December 1916, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, 15 December 1916; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 10 January 1917; discharged on furlough, 29 January 1917, to report to No 4 Command Depot, Wareham, 13 February 1917.
