Embarked from Adelaide, 23 June 1917. Absent from embarkation on board HMT 'Osterley' from Cape Town, South Africa, 18 August 1917; remained absent until apprehended in civilian clothes by Military Police on 6 September 1917: awarded 48 days' forfeiture of pay. Admitted to hospital with venereal disease, Cape Town, 7 September 1917; discharged, 20 September 1917. Absent without leave from his ward, No. 1 General Hospital, Wynberg, 2030 hrs, 28 September, to 0735 hrs, 29 September. Awarded total forfeiture of 8 days' pay.

Posted as a deserter, 5 October 1917. Declared not eligible to receive War Medals. Discharged, 21 July 1920, on account of being illegally absent from 5 October 1917 to 21 July 1920. Whereabouts subsequently unable to be determined. Army letter to wife (1923) at 85 George Street, Thebarton, SA, returned as 'Not known at above address for 4 years'.
