'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made a personal reconnaissance of a position under heavy fire. Later, when left in charge of his platoon, he held an extremely critical position for over four hours during a strong enemy attack. Throughout this period, by his personal courage and example, he rallied and inspired his men.'
