Admitted to 4th Field Ambulance, 16 July 1915; transferred to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Gallipoli, 17 July 1915 (varicocele), and transferred same day to Fleet Sweeper; admitted to 1st Australian Stationary Hospital, Lemnos, 17 July 1915; transferred to 17th General Hospital, Alexandria, 19 July 1915; to England on board HS 'Ceramic', 28 July 1915, and admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, 7 August 1915.

Found guilty, 14 February 1916, of being absent without leave and being in possession of an illegally altered pass: awarded 42 days' detention.

Found guilty, 23 August 1916, of being absent without leave from midnight, 19 August, to 6.30 am, 22 August 1916: awarded 2 days' confined to barracks, and forfeited 3 days' pay.

Found guilty, 7 December 1916, of being absent without leave from 10.15 pm, 9 November 1916, until apprehended in London, 9.30 am, 18 November 1916: awarded 120 days' detention (90 days remitted), and forfeiture of 58 days' pay.

Marched out to 3rd Training Bn, Durrington, 29 December 1916.

Found guilty, 28 February 1917, of, at Durrington, being absent without leave from 9.30 pm, 24 February, until returning to camp, 9.30 pm, 27 February 1917: awarded 96 hours' detention and forfeiture of a total of 8 days' pay.

Declared an illegal absentee, 1 May 1917; marched into 3rd Training Bn under escort, 31 May 1917.

Tried by District Court Martial, Larkhill, 16 June 1917: pleaded guilty to being absent without leave from 21 March till apprehended in London, 29 May 1917: found guilty: awarded 120 days' detention; in custody awaiting trial: 17 days; forfeited a total of 207 days' pay (£51-15-0). Unexpired portion of sentence (38 days) remitted as from 5 September 1917.

Rejoined unit in the field in France, 15 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left buttock and right hand), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, thence to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station and thence to Ambulance Train No 126; admitted to 22nd General Hospital, Dannes, 5 October 1917; transferred to England, 16 October 1917, and admitted same day to Eastbourne Military Hospital (wound: severe); to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 26 November 1917; discharged on furlough, 12 November 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 26 November 1917.

Found guilty, 3 December 1917, of being absent without leave from 3.30 pm, 27 November, to 11 am, 28 November 1917: admonished, and forfeited 2 days' pay.

Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, 8 December 1917.

Found guilty, 7 February 1918, of overstaying leave from marching in to Deverill, 5 February, till reporting back at 11.30 pm, 6 February 1918: admonished, and forfeited 1 day's pay.

Found guilty, 12 April 1918, of at Sandhill, being absent without leave from 7 pm, 9 April, until reporting back at 2 pm, 11 April 1918: awarded 2 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 4 days' pay.

Found guilty, 13 June 1918, of overstaying leave from midnight, 11 June, until apprehended by Military Police at Trowbridge, 6.45 am, 13 June 1918: awarded 2 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 3 days' pay.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Port Hacking', 3 December 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 27 January 1919, for onward travel to Adelaide; discharged, Adelaide, 1 December 1919.
