'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of parties burying cables under continuous heavy shell fire. Although wounded, he returned to duty on the first available date and organized working parties for extending the cable communication under the most trying circumstances, by his splendid courage setting a fine example to the men working under him.'
