'This man was a stretcher bearer during operations near MONTBREHAIN, north of ST. QUENTIN, on 5th October, 1918. He continually went into exposed places to attend to and bring in the wounded, frequently under heavy shell and machine gun fire. After seeing all the wounded of his own unit were removed he volunteered to assist stretcher bearers of other units, and during the whole of the day almost without ceasing, he was engaged in carrying wounded to the R.A.P. until the unit was relieved. Although practically exhausted he volunteered to carry a man out while the Company was being relieved.'
