Embarked Alexandria on SS 'Briton' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 28 May 1916; moved out from Australian Engineers Training Depot, Christchurch, and proceeded to France, 4 October 1916; marched into Australian General Base Depot, Etaples, 6 October 1916; marched out to 1st Division Engineers, 10 October 1916; taken on strength of 3rd Field Company Engineers, 12 October 1916. Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 14 December 1916, and transferred to 39th Casualty Clearing Station (measles). Transferred to Supernumerary list and posted for duty with Anzac Light Railway, 24 December 1916. Admitted to 39th Casualty Clearing Station, 25 December 1917 (psoriasis); transferred to Ambulance Train '16', 1 January 1917; admitted to 8th General Hospital, Rouen, 2 January 1917.
