Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty whilst digging a well. After three of his party had been severely gassed, he worked for 24 hours under fire until reaching a supply of water, which has since proved of the greatest value in saving the necessity for carrying parties, with attendant losses.'
