'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty on the 30th September, when in charge of a convoy of G.S. wagons conveying R.E. Stores to BELLEWARDE RIDGE. Between 6.00 and 7.00 a.m., when proceedidng from HELLFIRE Corner to BELLEWARDE RIDGE, owing to the dense fog and enemy fire, 3 vehicles were precipitated into the ditch alongside the road. The enemy fire became increasingly severe but the courage and initiative displayed by this N.C.O. enabled the wagons to be extricated and the load duly delivered to LITTLE WOOD DUMP. The road from Cambridge Road to LITTLE WOOD was under heavy fire the whole time and this convoy the only transport which had not abononed it. Sergeant FINCK has always under all conditions displayed most exemplary conduct. The C.R.E. speaks in the highest terms of the excellent work done by this transport.'
