'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the operations in the vicinity of ZONNEBEKE between the 4th/12th October, 1917. He on the 4th October, 1917 in the darkness and in the most of heavy enemy fire when four of his men were buried in a dugout went to their rescue, and although wounded he gave no thought to himself until they were liberated. He further continued in action until the company was relieved on the 11th October, 1917. On reporting his wounded, later he was evacuated.'
