Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all the officers of his company had become casualties he took command, organized and guided parties carrying ammunition and supplies to the front line under heavy shell fire. He worked unceasingly for two days and nights, setting a fine example of coolness, energy and devotion to duty.'

During an attack on the village, when the enemy had broken through our line, Sergeant FLEMING successfully organised and led a counter attack, driving the enemy out and regaining the position. This fearless conduct and initiative set a splendid example to his men and regained the position for us at a very critical period.'
